WALKING COUNTRY

This walk is designed specifically for large groups and organisations including primary and secondary school groups.

Step beyond the city streets and discover Narrm (Melbourne) through a different lens.

Join a First Peoples Aboriginal guide for a unique walking tour through the heart of Narrm. Discover the deep cultural history of this place, hear stories of the Birrarung (Yarra River), and gain insight into the enduring cultures of Victorian First Peoples.

Beginning at Fed Square, the walk continues along the Birrarung, stopping at the significant Birrarung Wilam (Common Ground) Aboriginal art installation, which features a stylised eel pathway, towering message stick sculptures, etched-metal panels resembling possum-skin cloaks, large stylised metal shields and spears, and a pair of large ornamental metal water vessels. The walk culminates at a semi-circular group of carved ancestor stones amongst which the recent Treaty between the state government and the Traditional Custodians of Victoria was signed.

This engaging walk reveals the historical and contemporary layers of Country that exist beneath the modern city, offering visitors a meaningful and memorable way to experience Narrm.

Listen, observe, engage and learn.
