WALKING COUNTRY

This walk is designed specifically for large groups and organisations. It is not suitable for primary or secondary schools.

Step beyond the city streets and discover Narrm (Melbourne) on our Scar Tree Walk, a unique and immersive cultural experience that reveals both traditional and contemporary aspects of the First Peoples of this land on which the city is built.

Led by a First Peoples Aboriginal guide, this extended walk takes you along the Birrarung (Yarra River), through the Birrarung Wilam (Common Ground) Aboriginal art installation, and across the William Barak Bridge (named after William Barak, a Ngurungaeta (elder) of the Wurundjeri-willam clan, the Traditional Owners of Narrm).

The journey continues past the National Tennis Centre, home of the annual Australian Open, known internationally as the “Happy Slam” because of its relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, to the MCG, the birthplace of Test cricket and the annual Boxing Day Test match, as well as the home of Australian Rules Football, a sport uniquely Australian and originating from a game witnessed by early settlers being played by the local Aboriginal men.

Standing on land that was once a traditional meeting place for the Kulin Nations, you will learn about the ongoing presence of Aboriginal culture within one of Australia’s most recognised contemporary gathering places for local, national and International sporting and other events.

The tour culminates at the protected Scar Trees, an important cultural heritage site offering a glimpse into more than 60,000 years of living history and culture that continues to thrive amidst a modern cityscape.

Listen, observe, engage and learn.
