The exhibition features a selection of illustrations by Trawloolway artist Lisa Kennedy and Wiradjuri artist Gloria Whalan from children’s books Wurramatyenna and the Magic Canoe and Wurramatyenna and the Call from the Sea by Lisa, and Peter the Pterosaur by Aunty Gloria.

Wurramatyenna and the Magic Canoe and Wurramatyenna and the Call from the Sea features Tasmanian Aboriginal themes of identity, metaphor, story and language. In Wurramatyenna and the Magic Canoe, Wurramatyenna overcomes the loss of his close friend Albatross. He is gifted a Magic Canoe in which he sets out alone, to find Albatross’s Island. In Wurramatyenna and the Call from the Sea, Wurramatyenna must overcome his fear in order to hear the sadness of his ancestors and their gifts. With help from his ocean friends, Wurramatyenna finds strength and courage to go on. In this second book, Wurramatyenna is called to deepen his own family and cultural connections.

Aunty Gloria writes children’s books based on her childhood and has four books published by Black Ink Press. In the first of this series of books, Peter the Pterosaur has difficulty keeping up with his siblings learning to fly. When he falls from his cliff top home he makes lots of new friends and evades many dangers as he tries to find his way home
