Join Donna Blackall (Yorta Yorta) in this free workshop to learn the craft of traditional coil weaving with natural materials, such as New Zealand Flax, to create a small basket or object. This workshop is part of our monthly weaving sessions, and we welcome those participants who have attended previously as well as beginners.
Yorta Yorta artist Donna Blackall has been practising and teaching the art of traditional coil basket weaving throughout Victoria for over a decade. She first learnt to weave in this style as a child and reconnected with the art in a workshop with master weaver Bronwyn Razem (Gunditijmara). Donna’s practice pushes this traditional technique into contemporary art forms that carry deep meaning and stories. Using an open style of coil weaving, Donna teaches workshops to Indigenous and non-Indigenous people with a strong focus on process rather than the outcome. Her work has been exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ballarat, the National Gallery of Victoria and here at the Koorie Heritage Trust.
