Self-Guided Design Tour

As part of Open House Melbourne, discover the Koorie Heritage Trust’s Birrarung Building through a self-guided architectural tour that explores how Country has been woven into the very fabric of the building.

Situated on the edge of the Birrarung (Yarra River) in the heart of Fed Square, the Koorie Heritage Trust is Australia’s only stand-alone First Peoples arts and cultural centre located in the heart of a capital city. Since relocating to the Birrarung Building in 2015, and following a major expansion completed in 2023, the building has become a significant example of contemporary Indigenous-led architecture and interior design.

Rather than simply applying Aboriginal design motifs, the architects (led by Lyons, Greenaway Architects and Architecture Associates) worked closely with KHT to embed Country into every aspect of the building. Colours, light, materials, texture and orientation all reflect the Birrarung, the surrounding landscape and the continuing cultures of Victorian First Peoples, creating an immersive experience that connects visitors to place.

During your visit, you can also watch a short presentation by First Peoples architect Jefa Greenaway of Greenaway Architects, who shares the design philosophy behind the building and explains how architecture can reconnect people with Country.

The project has since received multiple Victorian Architecture Awards.
