Celebrate the 34th anniversary of the Torres Strait Islander Flag and learn more about the story behind one of Australia’s most important national symbols.
Designed in 1992 by the late Bernard Namok after winning a competition held by the Islands Coordinating Council, the flag’s striking blue, green, white and black design represents the sea, land, culture and people of Zenadth Kes (Torres Strait), as well as the different island groups across the region.
Join Caleb Thaiday (Meriam/Erub Kebi Le) for a special community workshop exploring the history and meaning of the flag, before creating your own personal tribute through creating a custom bracelet or key ring.
It is our commitment to ensure our public programs remain free and accessible to everyone. However, there are real costs involved in delivering these important initiatives. While we remain dedicated to providing our programs at no charge, we would be deeply grateful for any contribution you may wish to make in support of our work. Every donation, no matter the size, helps us continue delivering culturally rich and accessible experiences for community and visitors alike.
Please note that photography, filming and sound recording may take place during this event. By attending, you consent to being photographed, filmed and/or recorded. Images and recordings may be used by the Koorie Heritage Trust for marketing, promotional and reporting purposes. If you do not wish to be photographed or recorded, please advise the photographer or a KHT staff member upon arrival.
We gratefully acknowledge the generous support of our public programming partners: Krystyna Campbell-Pretty and Family; and the Orloff Family Foundation.
