Madi Mercer: How I See You

Commissioned by Melbourne Fringe as part of the Deadly Fringe 2025 Program, How I See You is a new work by artist Madi Mercer (Wadawurrung).

Madi’s practice explores themes of female identity, Blak sprituality and Country. In this work, Madi reimagines her family as woven swans, weaving their stories into forms that embody beauty, connection and love of Country. Through these woven figures, she expands ideas of how Country can be represented within a curated exhibition space.

Displayed adjacent to Sandra Aitken’s Gilgar Gunditch Eel Basket, and Connie Hart: One Stitch at a Time, this work continues the powerful weaving traditions of  Southeast Australia, echoing the cultural legacy of  Aunty Connie Hart as can be seen in Connie Hart: One Stitch at a Time.

How I See You positions weaving as both a contemporary art practice, and a living thread of ancestral knowledge.

Presented in partnership with Fringe Festival as part of Deadly Fringe 2025.
